 THE HAMMER is the TRUE STORY of George and Doc, best friends from reform school to life in prison where George becomes an unbeatable prison boxer, with songwriter Doc as his cornerman and Crystal, his devoted Christian Transgender cellmate. When George is offered freedom to fight in the 1984 Olympics, he shocks everyone by turning it down, sending Doc on a journey to discover the true meaning of loyalty.


In 1974 George Lee Martin was sentenced to 40 years in prison for armed robbery. He was 18 years old and was sent to one of the toughest, most violent prisons in Tennessee. Inside, George took up boxing as a release and soon proved unbeatable, fighting other prisoners every Friday night for seven years. 

 Word spread about George, beyond the prison walls to Freeworld coaches. The warden decided to up the stakes and put him up against the pros. George beat them all, even the former US heavyweight champion of the world, John Tate, knocking him out in under a minute.  

In 1984 the U.S. Olympic team offered George the ultimate opportunity, his freedom in exchange for a place on the Olympic team and the chance to win gold for his country. George refused.

 THE HAMMER tells the remarkable true story of George Lee Martin, and why he turned down freedom, fame and glory for something far bigger.
